This Giving Week, Add Purpose to Passion

You may find Shubh accidentally breaking things or zapping people with static. The rest of the time she keeps the team’s operations running, scouts for syndication partners and also writes. Somewhat of an idealist, this animal-lover believes there is goodness in everyone.

And many of us likely don’t have an answer, as we think passion is for major actions that transform the world. But often, it’s the simple, everyday things that move or motivate us.

So this Giving Week, we'll show you how you can channel your everyday passions to do good and help create positive impact.

Food

Whether you live to eat or eat to live, there’s no denying the power of food – it fills tummies, lifts moods, and the process of preparing meals can be therapeutic.

At Willing Hearts, members of the public (food-loving or otherwise) can help to prepare meals that are cooked for about 5,000 people daily.

If being in the kitchen isn’t your cup of tea, you can help with the distribution and meet the people who benefit from your efforts. What a great way to nourish the body and do-good spirit!

Sports

If you are passionate about fitness, you’re likely to enjoy sports. But did you know that your running, tennis skills or even dance moves can have a philanthropic twist?

Buddy up with a special needs runner at RunningHour, and make those weekend runs a little different! If you prefer sweating it out on the tennis court instead, then coach and play a match with a blind player at Soundball’s sessions, while they wow you with their grit and determination.

Maybe turning up the music while grooving to the beat is your passion instead. Why not share it with the elderly who know a few moves of their own? Get Movin' for Charity promotes active aging through fitness and zumba sessions – where people are always welcome to join in!

Music

The universal appeal of music can bring cultures together, or in the case of Volunteer Guitar Connection, turn strangers to friends. Share your passion for music with fellow aficionados, and strum together to spread cheer at nursing homes and social service organisations. Let your melodies do some good!

Animals

Animal lovers, unite!

Having pets, rescuing snails on walking paths, and sharing knowledge with others is a way of living out your passion for animals. But you can also help rehabilitate and rehome dogs, cats and even rabbits! By joining fellow animal lovers at shelters around the island, you can be a companion to the furry friends that need the love you want to give.

Sewing

Sewing is a meditative activity that helps relieve stress. How about sewing a little gown for a baby on his or her final journey? Angel Gowns creates burial gowns for parents whose babies pass away prematurely. Your every stitch will provide comfort to the bereaved families, and dignity to the baby.

Reading

Love cuddling up with a good book at the end of the day? Why not share that delight by reading to children of incarcerated mothers at New Life Stories? Not only does it help the children improve their reading and language skills, you also help them socialise better by interacting with them.

You can also take your love of books further afield to rural communities in Asia, through Singapore International Foundation’s mobile library programme, Words on Wheels. Help foster the love for reading among children in these communities, and teach them how to self-learn.

You never know how your everyday joys can help do good. This Giving Week, don’t think twice about adding purpose to your passions, whatever they may be.
